Turf to dirt, to the pay window

By Tom Tolmich

When approaching a race, what do you look for? Route to sprint? Sprint to route? A recently claimed horse?

Well, since using the old turf-to-dirt move, I can honestly say it will provide you with a powerful angle that is easy and profitable.

Check out opening day at Emerald Downs: Spite and Malice is a huge favorite, but Briartic Blast is 13-1. Also, spot the turf race last time in her past performances and you would have had the $56 exacta had you played her with Philamina Halfmoon! Check out Sarna on Sunday: a great price at 9-2, she wins by 2 lengths. I had $70 to win and collected on yet another ticket.

Look at any old racing form you have lying around. Take a look at some other examples. You'll see race after race where horses going from turf to dirt win, often at great odds. Be aware that if the horse is bred for turf or has shown most of his/her success on grass, the move to dirt may not be as significant.

To be sure, just look at the number of starts on grass. If a horse shows one or two, then it's likely that the move to dirt is going to improve the runner.

If you're tired of playing some "system" or if you just haven't found that one angle to give you the edge you need, let me leave you with this story: I followed a sprinter for several months at a track in Texas, and this horse was running turf route races, getting thrashed time and time again. Finally, he was entered back on the main track and sprinting. This was his day, I thought, since his last win came sprinting on dirt. I watched in amazement as he won and paid $35 to win.

Give it a whirl. It may be what you're looking for!
